About

About The U-B-U Conference

Welcome to the Thompson River’s University – U-B-U Conference!

Assumption of sameness is an approach often invoked when referring, engaging, or interacting with people with intersecting identities or diverse backgrounds. We assume ‘they’ are like ‘us’, or they belong to a constructed monolithic group with similar associated identities. Regardless, of what we know about who ‘they’ are each interaction becomes limited to our ways of knowing.

How can people be their authentic selves amidst our desires for them to be just like us?

The 2nd annual EDI & AR Conference, U-B-U (translation: you be you) is an exploration of how our unconscious desire for sameness creates tensions for individuals, groups, and institutions. It is an opportunity for growth through understanding the nuances of the spoken and the unspoken, the actions and inactions, the truth and the fallacy associated with the attributions we may unknowingly ascribe to people.
