Final Exams

Should the Open Learning course you are taking have a final exam, then you must take that exam to complete the course. You must achieve at least 50% on the final exam to pass the course overall - anything less than 50% on the final exam will result in a fail for the course.

Students are permitted one exam attempt per course registration. Should you fail the final exam, you will need to re-register in the course in order to take the exam again.

Students are responsible for scheduling their own final exams and for any fees charged by ProctorU or the testing centre to supervise the exam. The last day that you can write your exam is on your course completion date.

Exam Methods
Please note, not all exam methods are available for every course and there are no supplemental examination options.

  • Virtual Invigilation via ProctorU: Most Open Learning courses have a virtual final exam option that can be taken from home using an online proctoring service - ProctorU. Should your exam have this option, you can schedule your exam for any time that is convenient for you that is on or before your course completion date. We recommend that you schedule it with ProctorU a minimum of 72 hours in advance. If your course has a “final exam” tab in Moodle, please refer to that for information about how to take your exam online.

  • Exam Centre Invigilation: We also provide the choice of in-person examinations for students in Canada for whom it may not be feasible or desirable to take advantage of the online proctoring option. The in-person options will require students to take the exam at an approved testing centre. Please note that not all approved testing centres are approved to supervise online exams. If the testing centre is not approved to supervise an online exam, it will be a paper based exam. In person exams must be scheduled at least three weeks in advance by emailing the completed Statement of Presiding Supervisor form to exams@tru.ca. We recommend that you start the in person exam scheduling process a minimum of 3.5 weeks before you want to write your exam.

  • Non Virtual Exam or Paper Based Exam: Some courses may not have a virtual final exam option available or may have a paper only exam option. For those courses it will be an in person exam that must be taken at an approved testing centre. In person exams must be scheduled at least three weeks in advance by emailing the completed Statement of Presiding Supervisor form to exams@tru.ca. We recommend that you start the in person exam scheduling process a minimum of 3.5 weeks before you want to write your exam.

Should you be unclear what options are available for your final exam for your course, how to schedule it or if you have any exam related questions, please email exams@tru.ca.
