Archaeological Assessments
TRU is committed to working with Indigenous partners to ensure that archaeological assessments and studies are undertaken prior to any construction on campus or TRU property.
TRU values the opportunity to consult with Indigenous partners and rely on their traditional knowledge and values when completing archaeological assessments and studies.
To date, TRU has consulted with Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc to complete archaeological assessments on four sites in Kamloops.
East Village
The Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Natural Resource Department conducted an Archaeological Impact Assessment of 620 Dalgleish Road in April 2022.
One area of high archaeological potential was identified and subject to subsurface testing. All test results were negative and no artifacts or archaeological features were encountered during the investigation.
Guerin Creek
The Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Natural Resource Department conducted an Archaeological Impact Assessment of Guerin Creek in April 2022.
Three test areas displaying high archaeological potential were subject to subsurface testing. All results were negative and no artifacts or archaeological features were encountered during the investigation.
725 McGill Road
The Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Natural Resource Department conducted an Archaeological Impact Assessment of the McGill corridor in July 2021.
One test area displaying high archaeological potential was subject to subsurface testing. No artifacts of archaeological features were encountered during the investigation.
800 University Drive
The Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Natural Resource Department conducted an Archaeological Impact Assessment of 800 University Drive in July 2021.
An area of high archaeological potential was identified during the field visit and was subject to subsurface testing. No artifacts or archaeological features were encountered during the investigation.
Planned assessments
TRU is planning to initiate assessments of multiple new sites on the Kamloops campus in 2023.
These include:
- North Bench
- Hudson’s Ridge
- McGill Road
TRU is also committed to working with Williams Lake First Nations to plan assessments of locations on the Williams Lake campus.
Results from these assessments will be shared as the reports become available.
