Tuition sponsorship
Some Indigenous students are eligible to receive support from their First Nations/Inuit/Métis or other organizations for their post-secondary education. TRU helps to facilitate the unique agreement between students and sponsors.
How it works
- Submit a TRU Sponsorship Application Form to TRU before your registration date. Your sponsor will have to sign off on this document. If your sponsorship is not in place before your registration date, you will have to pay the necessary commitment fee to complete your registration.
- Once TRU receives the form, your account will be flagged "Sponsored Student". This can take up to two weeks after the receipt of the sponsorship document.
- After the tuition sponsorship contract has been set up, you will be responsible for ensuring that your sponsor receives your course registration data form which serves as the approval of your enrolment with TRU. This is also the sponsor's invoice for your costs. You can print this document from your myTRU account or ask at Enrolment Services for a copy. If you wish, you can make a payment online at any time using a credit card by logging into your myTRU account or by using an alternative payment method. If you make your own payment, you can submit your paid registration data form to your sponsor for re-imbursement from them.
- If your sponsor doesn't pay the invoice by the deadline, or if there is an outstanding balance on the portion for which the student is responsible, the student file will be placed on financial hold. This means you won't be able to make changes to your registration, view grades, order transcripts or apply to convocate.
*** A student whose tuition and/or fees have not been paid in full by the payment deadline for sponsored students, will be assessed a $75 penalty per term and charged 2% interest monthly. A financial hold will also be placed on the student’s account.

Financial assistance
We urge you to apply for the many national, provincial and local funding opportunities available to Indigenous students. Not all funding requires high academic standing.
Many awards are not accessed simply because students are not aware of the availability of funds. Students are advised to contact their sponsoring agency prior to admission and throughout their program for information regarding funding opportunities and policies.

Buying textbooks
Purchasing tips
Once you register for your classes, you will need the professor's name and section number to find the correct textbook for your class.
Most textbooks are available for purchase by the middle of August. Some key points to keep in mind:
- Both new and used textbooks can be returned for a full refund up to two weeks after classes commence.
- To return a textbook, you will need the original receipt and the unmarked textbook. Books may also be purchased through the TRU Bookstore website.
- If you have specific concerns or needs please let our staff know and we will do our best to assist you, or call the TRU Bookstore at 250-828-5141

If you are being sponsored for textbooks
The sponsor will send the sponsorship letter in advance to the the TRU Bookstore. The Bookstore cashier will then have the sponsorship letter set up in the register system outlining exactly what the student is entitled to purchase including the dollar amount the student is being sponsored for. Upon checkout, the sponsored student is required to supply their name and student number. The friendly staff at the Bookstore can do the rest!
If books cost more than sponsorship budget
It is the student's responsibility to contact their sponsor if books end up costing more than the sponsor has allocated for. Some sponsors will allow students to purchase books first and be sure to ask them first. If the sponsor will not cover the extra cost, it is up to the student to cover the price difference.
Sponsorship tips
It is a good idea to contact your sponsor before coming to the Bookstore. The bookstore can only process transactions after the sponsorship letter has been received.
It can also be helpful if you know how much you are being sponsored for when purchasing textbooks so there are no surprises when it comes to checkout.

University preparation
University preparation is for students with incomplete secondary education, or students who lack skills and prerequisites for further post-secondary work. It provides the prerequisites for direct entry into many TRU programs and programs at other institutions, and will also enhance employment skills.
This program is offered in various Indigenous communities in the Cariboo Chilcotin region on a yearly basis. For more information, contact Enrolment Services at 250-392-8020.
