TRU students can participate in a range of education abroad opportunities such as Student Exchange, Field School, Co-operative Education, and for many other learning opportunities.
International opportunities
Study Abroad
The Study Abroad program allows students to live and study in a different country for one or two semesters.
With over 40 countries to consider, students can choose from a wide range of programs and locations to meet their needs through TRU Bilateral Exchange and the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP).
Learn MoreField School
A field school is a group of TRU students who travel abroad together under the leadership of a TRU faculty member. Schools range from two to eight weeks, depending on the discipline, and include work prior to departure and upon return.
Field school offerings differ each year and are offered at different times.
Learn MoreShort-term Summer Programs
Yet another great way to travel and experience another culture — for credit and travel on a budget. This type of trip is considered a study abroad exchange.
Many of our Bilateral exchange partners run two-, three-, four- and six-week programs, which students can take part in during the months of May, June and July. These short-term programs typically cover housing, some meals and cultural activities. Students still register at TRU for one or two courses and pay tuition to TRU. All other fees are paid directly to the partner school.
These summer programs transfer back to one or two courses at TRU following approval from a program advisor. If you are not sure about diving into a full semester abroad, let this short-term experience be the testing ground to get your feet wet!

Co-op Abroad
All TRU students within the Co-op program have the opportunity to learn more about International Co-op Abroad placements. Students considering working overseas should allow up to eight months prior to departure for planning. Students wishing to participate in a Co-op Abroad should be aware there are limited locations at this time to travel to and select from.
First step is to speak with a Co-op coordinator OR follow the link to the TRU Co-op webpages.
The Ministry of Post Secondary Education and Future Skills has additional information to support students in learning more about working abroad.
Learn MoreConference, practicum, research, internships, directed studies
At TRU, students do have the opportunity to attend International conferences, participate on an internship with another university and or undertake a course under the guidance of a faculty member, which is very individualized and tailored specifically to a student’s special interests.
Students have undertaken these types of opportunities internationally in such diverse locations as Antarctica, Sri Lanka and Peru.
