Water and Wastewater Courses

TRU has comprehensive industry relevant programs and courses related to all aspects of water and wastewater treatment. Programs and courses are available in the classroom, online and blended models utilizing Kamloops’ premier water treatment facility.

Online & Print Format, Continuous Intake $185.00 (6 hrs)

An introductory course for owners and operators of small water systems. This includes water systems in small communities, water hauled in tanker trucks, trailer parks, seasonal campgrounds, service stations, temporary facilities for housing workers, work camps, improvement districts, ranchers, water equipment vendors, joint water works, good neighbour water systems, small irrigation, and hunting and fishing camps. Understanding small water system operations is vital to the provision of potable (safe) drinking water in these small water systems.

At the successful completion of this course, you will receive a WaterSafe Certificate of Completion.

Why take this course?

XWTP 0200 WaterSafe BC is a course of basic instruction for owners and operators of small water systems. Under the BC Drinking Water Protection Act and Drinking Water Protection Regulation, water suppliers have a legal responsibility to provide safe drinking water for human consumption and for the purposes of food preparation. The main goal of the WaterSafe course is to provide you with the basic information you will need to meet your legal responsibilities and to be an effective water supplier.

This course won't make you an expert water systems operator, but it will introduce you to the core concepts of small water systems and describe your responsibilities. Critical information about water sources, water quality monitoring, treatment, storage and distribution, water hauling, and how to keep your water safe will be provided.

The course also provides tools and resources that you can utilize:

• To meet your obligations and responsibilities;
• To understand potential threats to your drinking water supply;
• To learn mitigation strategies to reduce the risk of threats;
• To learn the minimum water treatment standards; and
• To monitor to your systems.

Once your registration is complete you will receive an email from the Program Assistant in the Water and Wastewater Technology program with instructions for completing the course online. Included in these instructions will be a web address (URL) for Moodle. Should you choose to complete the course in print format, you will need to request a course syllabus to be mailed to you.

Continuing Education for Water Treatment Industry

Operators currently in the field may take single courses (modules) to meet the mandatory continuing education units (CEUs) defined by the EOCP or for their own general interest. These courses are available in print format only and do not have online components. These courses are also CEU approved in Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
