Youth Train in Trades

Get a head start on your technical trades training

Youth Train in Trades is an industry training program for high school students that enables them to take courses for credit towards both high school graduation and completion of an apprenticeship or industry training program. Tuition for these programs is funded by your school district, so you’ll just need to cover the costs for ancillary fees, books, personal protective equipment and tools.

Students who complete these programs, which are made possible by partnerships between school districts and TRU, typically have very good success in finding employment and developing useful life-long skills.

Choose from the following foundation trades programs:

• Automotive service technician
• Residential construction (Levels 1 and 2)
• Electrician
• Heavy mechanical
• Horticulture
• Instrumentation and control technician
• Industrial mechanic (millwright/machinist)
• Piping trades: plumber, steamfitter, pipefitter
• Power Engineering
• Professional cook (Level 1 and 2)
• Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic
• Meatcutter
• Welder

How to apply

Students meet with their high school trade and technology coordinator/counsellor to discuss Youth Train in Trades (dual credit) program options. These are competitive seats with each district having their own criteria for support.

Starts 6 p.m. every third Thursday of the month.

Jan. 18, Feb. 15, March 21, April 18, May 16, June 20, Sept. 19, Oct. 17, Nov. 21

RSVP one day in advance with dgeiger@tru.ca as there are no drop-ins. If there are no RSVPs, please contact us for a tour during the day between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. or we will see you the next month.

Where?

Inside the Main Entrance of Trade and Technology (TT 158) building which is the east end of the building above the roundabout by the Campus Activity Centre.
