TRU and BC Wildfire Service: Partnering in Wildfire
Shaping the Future of Wildfire
Wildfires are a critical issue across the globe. In response, Thompson Rivers University (TRU) and the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) have formed a groundbreaking partnership, designed to advance wildfire research, education, training and innovation. This partnership is endorsed by the Province of BC, and draws on expertise from a range of fields to address multifaceted wildfire challenges and prepare the next generation of professionals.
A Collaborative Journey
"Over the past few years, TRU and BCWS have fostered a strong relationship," says Shannon Wagner, Vice President of Research at TRU. "This partnership is about merging training, education, research, and innovation to meet the changing wildfire management needs caused by climate change."
An exciting aspect of the partnership is the creation of an educational pathway that allows students to progress from certificate and diploma programs to potentially earning bachelor's or master's degrees in wildfire science. This offers an opportunity for students to develop a deep understanding of wildfire management and science, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle the complex issues associated with wildfires and their impacts.
David Greer, Director of Strategic Engagement and Partnerships at BCWS, emphasized, “In developing this learning strategy, our goal is to engage individuals from the beginning of their careers, helping them progress and see themselves with BC Wildfire long-term.”
The Institute for Wildfire Science, Adaptation, and Resiliency
Another feature of the partnership is a shared interest in the research produced by the Institute for Wildfire Science, Adaptation, and Resiliency at TRU. The institute brings together practitioners and scientists to explore new research questions and advance wildfire science. This relationship ensures practical insights help define research questions and findings are rapidly incorporated into education and training programs.
The traditional approach to wildfire management, which has primarily focused on scientific aspects such as prediction and response, is evolving. Today's wildfire management strategies consider a more holistic view that include areas such as community health and Indigenous fire stewardship practices.
The collaboration between TRU and BCWS is not only about academic research; it integrates science and innovation with operational practice. Often, scientific advancements are ahead of the technologies used by agencies. By working closely with researchers, BCWS ensures scientific insights are translated into practical tools and strategies to support operational decisions.
