At Thompson Rivers University, Williams Lake campus, the following first aid courses are offered:

General First Aid

First aid is an important part of everyday life, at home, work or at play. Everyone should learn first aid and be willing to provide basic care until emergency assistance arrives. There are many different types of first aid available so how do you know which one best fits you and your life style? At TRU-WL we offer the following courses:

WorksafeBC

- Basic First Aid
- Intermediate First Aid
- Advanced First Aid
- Transportation Endorsement 

Do you know what you need to meet the WorkSafeBC regulations? It all depends on the number of employees, the type of work your company performs, and your location. To determine which Workplace First Aid meets the need for your business go to the WorksafeBC website.


Red Cross

- Standard First Aid with CPR-C
- Basic Life Support
- Emergency Child Care First Aid

Check with your employer or educational institution to confirm which course you require.

Acceptable Photo Identification includes Driver's License, Student Card, BCID, or Passport.


Basic First Aid (Previously called Occupational First Aid Level 1)  •  XOCH 0800

This 1-day, 8-hour program equips you with the emergency skills needed to stabilize an injured person until trained help arrives. Areas covered include the use of AED, bleeding control, CPR, and conscious and unconscious choking. Students must show photo ID. Upon successful completion, a certificate will be issued which is valid for 3 years.  Tuition includes textbook and pocket mask.

 Intermediate First Aid (Previously called Occupational First Aid Level 2)  •  XOCH 0810

The WorkSafeBC Intermediate First Aid course is a 16 hour program designed for the urban attendant. Initial certification requires full participation and course attendance. Candidates must demonstrate practical skill competency and achieve 70% on a multiple choice. 

Upon successful completion, a certificate will be issued which is valid for 3 years.

There is no pre-requisite for this course. You DO NOT have to take Basic First aid prior to Intermediate First Aid.

Advanced First Aid (Previously called Occupational First Aid Level 3)  •  XOCH 0820

The Advanced First Aid program has been designed to provide the first aid attendant with the skills to function as part of an effective first aid program in the workplace. The course consists of 20 lessons involving classroom study and practice. Home study, including pre-reading for each lesson and completion of homework is essential.

This course is physically demanding and requires prolonged kneeling, but additional kneeling comfort can be provided upon request of the instructor.

Upon successful completion, a certificate will be issued which is valid for 3 years.

There is no pre-requisite for this course. You DO NOT have to take Basic First aid or Intermediate First Aid prior to Advanced First Aid.

Transportation Endorsement  •  XOCH 0780

As an endorsement to the Basic First Aid (Occupational First Aid Level 1) or Intermediate First Aid (Occupational First Aid Level 2) certificate, this course meets the needs of those responsible for transporting injured workers to medical aid from more remote settings. The endorsement expires with your Basic First Aid (or OFA Level 1) or Intermediate First Aid (OFA Level 2) certificate. You must hold a valid Basic First Aid (or OFA Level 1) certificate or a valid Intermediate First Aid (OFA Level 2) certificate to receive the endorsement. 

Requirements: Current Basic First Aid (or OFA Level 1) certificate or current Intermediate First Aid (or OFA Level 2) certificate and photo ID

 Standard First Aid with CPR-C  •  XOCH 0840

This 2-day First Aid course includes the following:

  • Breathing and circulation emergencies
  • First aid for respiratory and cardiac arrest
  • Wound care
  • Head, neck, and spinal injuries
  • Bone, muscle, and joint injuries
  • Sudden medical emergencies
  • Environmental illnesses
  • Poisons
  • CPR Level C

Emergency Child Care First Aid  •  XOCH 0880 

This 8-hour emergency response care program offers an overview of first aid and CPR skills, the EMS system, bone/muscle/ joint injuries, wound care, head and spine injuries, and much more. The course includes a focus on childhood injuries and illnesses. This course was designed for those working with children as well as for parents/caregivers.

Basic Life Support  •  XOCH 0400

This 4-hour First Aid course offers training in:  Glove Removal, Primary Assessment, CPR, AED, Airway Obstruction, Assisted Ventilation, and Basic Life Support special considerations.

Mental Health First Aid for Adults who Interact with Youth  •  XOCH 0060

This 14-hour course focuses on the basics of providing mental health support to youth aged 12-24.  Participants will be better prepared to interact confidently with the young people in their lives who are struggling with mental health.  Topics covered include substance overdose, suicidal behaviours, panic attacks, acute stress reactions, psychotic episodes, common disorders, trauma, and anxiety.

Time: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. for 2 days

Requirements:  Minimum age of 19 years old.  Only those participants who attend the full course will be deemed to have successfully completed the course and therefore eligible to receive a certificate.

Late policy for ALL First Aid courses:

WorkSafe BC Regulations require all First Aid courses to start at the scheduled time. Due to the amount of time required for the approved curriculum, late students will not be permitted to join a class in session.

Late or no-show students are not eligible for refunds.
