Student loans and grants
In Canada, student financial assistance is available from the federal and provincial/territorial governments. However, all applications for assistance are made through the province of which you are considered a resident.
There are two main forms of assistance available: loans and grants. Student loans must be paid back (for some provinces other than BC, with interest), whereas grants, do not need to be repaid as long as eligibility is maintained.
Benefits of government student assistance
- No payments required while you are a full-time student
- You do not need to have a co-signer or collateral
- A portion of your loan may be forgiven
- You may also be considered for non-repayable funding such grants and bursaries
- A payment relief safety net is available if you encounter financial hardship during repayment.
Tuition Sponsorship
Some students have all or part of their tuition and student fees paid by a third party, such as an Indigenous community, employer, or government agency. This is known as sponsorship. Whether you’re studying part-time or full-time, sponsorship may be an option for you.
