Privacy Complaints
A privacy breach occurs where a public body collects, uses, or discloses personal information without authorization under the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (“FIPPA”).
If you believe TRU has breached your personal privacy, you have the right to make a privacy complaint.
TRU Privacy Complaint Process:
- Send an email to the TRU Privacy and Access Office at privacy@tru.ca setting out your complaint. Please include:
- Your name and contact information;
- Your relationship to TRU;
- The nature of the alleged breach of privacy;
- The name of any individuals at TRU who may have been involved.
- The Privacy and Access Officer will consider your complaint and determine whether there has been a breach of personal privacy in contravention of FIPPA.
- Where the Privacy and Access Officer determines there has been a privacy breach, they will take appropriate action which may include following the TRU Breach Protocol.
Information on the Breach Protocol can be found here. - If you do not hear back from TRU within 30 business days of sending your complaint to the Privacy Office, or you are unsatisfied with how TRU has addressed your complaint, you can make a complaint to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC).
If you wish to complain directly to the OIPC, please note that OIPC’s Refer Back Policy: “Unless circumstances warrant otherwise, the OIPC’s policy is to refer a complainant back to the public body where the complainant has not given the public body an opportunity to respond to and attempt to resolve the complaint.”
