International Mobility Study Abroad Award
International Mobility Study Abroad Award of $1,000 is awarded per semester to assist TRU undergraduate students fund their study abroad/exchange experience.
To be eligible, students must:
- Be approved by the TRU Study Abroad program to participate on an exchange.
- Be a full-time registered undergraduate student for each academic term.
- Provide a copy of the Host School Acceptance Letter.
- Complete all required steps as directed by the Study Abroad Office prior to receiving the bursary.
Awards will be applied to the student’s myTRU account. Students who withdraw from the Study Abroad program will not be eligible. TRU Study Abroad has the authority to terminate the award if the student’s behaviour is detrimental to the program, to others, to themselves, to TRU, or to any international host partner/organization.
TRU students who participates on a faculty led, field school trip for credit, are eligible for the Student Field School Award of $500.
BCSA Study Abroad Scholarship
The British Columbia Study Abroad (BCSA) Consortium is a group of BC post-secondary institutions that work together to encourage students to gain international academic experience by offering short-term study abroad programs across disciplines and countries around the world. British Columbia Study Abroad Consortium helps make short-term study abroad more accessible, affordable and enjoyable for both students and BC institutions.
BC Society Scholarship
The British Columbia Scholarship Society provides two funding opportunities to assist students wishing to study in other countries.
One World International Scholarship Program
Administered automatically through the Study Abroad Office — students do not need to apply. The number of awards available varies depending on the endowment awarded to Thompson Rivers University; the awards are given to Study Abroad applicants based on cumulative GPAs in the amount of $2,000 per student. Qualifying students normally receive notice from the Study Abroad Office in December. No application is required.
Premier’s International Scholarship
Intended for students who are enrolled in overseas programs. Students must complete and submit an application directly to the Victoria Foundation. Premier’s scholarships are funded from the returns on a $15 million endowment fund established by the Province of BC for international education. The scholarships are part of the One World international scholarship program managed by the society. The Ministry of Post Secondary Education and Future Skills provided an additional $2 million for the program in 2012 as part of British Columbia’s International Education Strategy.
TRUSU CUEF Grant Proposal
Students are invited to submit a proposal to TRUSU. The students’ union and the university have partnered to provide funding to offset the cost for students to attend conferences and host events.
Funding is provided through the Comprehensive University Enhancement Fund (CUEF) and administered by the TRU Students’ Union through an application process. Please keep in mind funding is limited and priority will be given to first time applicants and applications that make cost-effective and efficient use of funding.
BUTEX Scholarship (UK)
Each year BUTEX awards a number of scholarships to students studying abroad for a semester or a whole academic year, and students undertaking an overseas work/internship/traineeship placement of varying lengths of time.
BUTEX scholarships are based on a calendar year and not the academic year. Students that have a placement that will take place across two calendar years will be able to apply in each year, but please note individuals can only win a BUTEX scholarship once. To be eligible:
- You must have been offered, be currently undertaking or already completed, a study abroad or exchange placement or a work/internship/traineeship placement.
- Your study abroad, exchange or work placement must take place in the calendar year in which you apply.
- Your placement must be for either one semester or one year if it is a study abroad experience.
- Your work, internship or traineeship placements must be overseas and do not need to be a specific length of time.
- You must be enrolled in your undergraduate course when you apply for and receive a scholarship. Once students graduate, they are not eligible to receive a scholarship.
DAAD (Germany)
Every year, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports well over 100,000 German and international students and researchers around the globe — making it the world's largest funding organization of its kind.
DAAD scholarships are aimed primarily at graduates, doctoral students and postdocs and are awarded for study and research visits to universities and non-university research institutions in Germany. In some programs, internships are also funded.
SEMP (Switzerland)
Funded by the Swiss federal government, the Swiss European Mobility Programme (SEMP) is open to all students going on exchange to a Swiss university, regardless of their nationality. All students at bachelor's and master's level are eligible, except for those on a gap year.
The scholarship amounts to CHF 1600 per semester (CHF 400 per month) and covers the entire duration of the exchange (one or two semesters). This amount is paid in two installments, one at the beginning and one at the end of the exchange. Students can complete an exchange at a partner higher education institution in Switzerland of up to 12 months per study cycle (bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate). These visits are recognized for the studies at their own university.
Ernst Mach (Austria)
The OeAD (Austrian Agency for International Cooperation in Education and Research) and the BMWF (Austrian Federal Ministry of Education and Science) award the Ernst Mach Grant for studying at an Austrian University of Applied Sciences to selected students based on the results of the assessment procedure. The program is open for applicants from non-EU countries going on exchange to an Austrian university of applied sciences for one or two semesters (maximum 10 months). The following criteria must be met in order to apply for the grant program:
- Study level: Graduate students or undergraduate students. Bachelor students need to have successfully completed at least four semesters of studies by the time of taking up the grant.
- Maximum age 35 years
- Applicants must not have studied/pursued research/pursued academic work in Austria in the last six months before taking up the grant.
- Language proficiency: applicants have to be proficient in the language of instruction. In case of FHWien of WKW that would be English OR German.
BWS Scholarships (Germany)
Through the Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM, the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung has supported international exchange among university students and young professionals since 2001. They are all part of a living network. This scholarship supports students from Baden-Württemberg universities during their time abroad, and funds students from international universities while they are studying in Baden-Württemberg. Around 1,500 young people benefit from this scholarship each year.

Universidad de La Sabana (Colombia)
Students from partner universities, who are also applying for an exchange semester in Universidad de La Sabana during 2023-1.
JASSO scholarships (Japan)
The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) is an organization under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. As a leading organization in the provision of student services, JASSO comprehensively administers scholarship and loan programs, and supports programs for international students and student life support programs. JASSO aims to foster creative individuals who can become the leaders of the next generation of society, while promoting international understanding and exchange. Students must satisfy the following conditions:
- Students from all countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan including Taiwan and Palestine.
- Students accepted by a Japanese school under a student exchange agreement or other student exchange arrangement with their home school.
- Students not having the financial means to study in Japan.
- Students eligible for a Student Visa. (For study in Japan for 90 days or less, Japanese school will arrange the status of residence.）
- Students, upon the termination of the period of study in Japan, will complete their studies at their home school.
- Students demonstrating excellent academic and personal records at their home school.
- Students receiving more than 80,000 JPY in total from other scholarships for study in Japan are ineligible for this scholarship.
Kanagawa University (Japan)
Kanagawa University provides scholarships for exchange students from partner partner institution. Applications will be accepted after arrival in Japan. There are certain conditions for applying.
It should also be noted that support will be provided in the case of students who are entitled to a JASSO Japan Student Exchange Support Program (Scholarship for Short-term Study in Japan). Information will be updated as confirmed. Contents may vary depending on the academic calendar each year.
