Funding for Former Youth in Care
BC Provincial Tuition Waiver Program (PTWP)
The Provincial Tuition Waiver Program provides a grant to eligible current or former youth in care studying full- or part-time in a TRU undergraduate program or courses, including Continuing Education courses. The grant pays for all regular tuition and eligible fees.
Learning for Future Grant (LFG)
The Learning for Future Grant provides an annual grant of $3,500 once per program year (August 1 to July 31) to current or former youth in care who are PTWP eligible and enrolled in a program or course leading to a credential (stand alone courses are not eligible). This grant assists with additional education related costs that are not covered by the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program (e.g. textbooks, computers, supplies, etc.)
Note: An LFG Declaration must be completed annually in order to remain eligible.
How to apply and register in courses
- Complete your Provincial Tuition Waiver Program (PTWP) and Learning for Future Grant (LFG) application
- Submit your completed and signed application (PDF) to finaid@tru.ca. Allow 6 weeks for approval.
- After approval, choose the registration pathway that applies to you:
On-campus courses
Study as a cohort in your classes, gaining in-class and after class support from your professors and your peers. Find friendships and study pals. Build a community. Learn together.
- Accept your admission offer to an on-campus program (if applicable).
- Register for your on-campus courses through myTRU.
- Once approved, your Provincial Tuition Waiver funding will be applied to eligible tuition and fees before the end of the semester.
Online courses
Most OL courses are asynchronous (not live) so are very flexible and can fit around work and childcare, but it is primarily solo self study. Progress in these courses require considerable self discipline and good time management skills as they lack many of the supports of an on-campus environment.

The Provincial Tuition Waiver Program (PTWP) tuition waiver application process can take up to six weeks. Once we have been advised by StudentAid BC that you are approved, your eligibility will automatically renew each semester for all eligible program and courses. You do not need to re-apply.
After you have registered for course(s), you will normally need to purchase the required books and materials (and in some cases equipment) on your own. The Learning for Future Grant is intended to cover these costs. NOTE: The LFG Declaration must be completed annually (normally in the summer before a new school year).

Please note that if you are applying for StudentAid BC full-time grants and student loans, the full value of your tuition waiver credits must be claimed on your loan application as a resource (Under Financial Information > Other Financial Support > "Will you receive government funding..."). However the Learning for Future Grant is exempt and does not need to be claimed.
