Alternate Format Requests: CAPER-BC
Centre for Accessible Post-secondary Education Resources BC (CAPER-BC) provides accessible learning and teaching materials to students and instructors who cannot use conventional print because of a disability or medical condition.
They provide alternate formats for all print material including textbooks, course packs, journal articles, online sources, tests and syllabi and library material. CAPER-BC is a service delivered by Langara College and is funded by the B.C. Ministry of Post Secondary Education and Future Skills.

CAPER-BC is a service available to students who have been approved for alternate format materials as an academic accommodation and are already registered in the courses for which they require the alternate format materials. To access this service:
- Fill out both pages of the CAPER application form and return it to our office via email. Please note that you are only required to submit your CAPER application form once. If you have filled out a CAPER application form in the past, please proceed with submitting your textbook information using the form below.
- Provide your textbook information by filling out the CAPER request form below for each textbook that you require in alternate format.
Once we have received your CAPER application form and textbook information, a request will be submitted to CAPER-BC, and they will typically follow up with you in one to three business days. If the textbook is not available in their library, CAPER will reach out to the publisher to see if they can get a copy in an alternate format.
If both options are not available, you can send in a new, unmarked hard copy of the textbook to be reproduced into an alternate format. This reproduction process can take up to five weeks. If you prefer not to send in hard copies for reproduction, you can choose to buy a digital copy of your textbooks.
Other e-book options
- You can search the free BC Campus Open Textbook Collection to see if your textbooks are available.
- You can also look online to purchase the eBook versions of your textbooks on VitalSource.
If you choose to go with these options and not go through CAPER, please be aware that e-books are not always accessible with assistive technology (Read&Write, screen readers, etc.) and you will only have access to the e-version for a limited time. Please take these issues into consideration before making your decision.
