Academic Standing and Probation
All Thompson Rivers University students are expected to maintain acceptable standards of academic performance. This is known as Academic Standing and is governed by TRU Senate policy ED 3-2 regarding Satisfactory Academic Progress.
The requirements to be in Good Standing will vary by program and are outlined in the university calendar. The minimum standard for the University is a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 1.67, however some programs may have higher and/or additional standards.
- Some programs have a minimum grade required for all core courses in the program;
- Some programs have a higher minimum cumulative GPA required for Good Standing;
- Some programs have a promotion policy, which may require the student to withdraw from the program if the student does not attain the required minimum grades in specific courses.
If you meet the minimum standards for your program, you are deemed to be in Good Standing.
Academic standing is assessed at the end of every semester.
Academic probation
If your grade point average (GPA) falls below the minimum required for your program after attempting 24 credits of course work you will be placed on Academic Probation. This is a warning that your academic performance must improve or you may be required to withdraw after your next academic standing assessment.
What can I do to get off Academic Probation?
Students on Academic Probation who subsequently meet their program’s minimum standards will return to Good Standing.
Students on Academic Probation who demonstrate significant improvement toward their program’s minimum standard but remain below that standard will remain on Academic Probation up to a total of 24 additional credits attempted.
Students on Academic Probation who do not show significant improvement will be required to withdraw following their next academic standing assessment.
Students on Academic Probation who do not return to Good Standing after attempting an additional 24 credits will be required to withdraw.
When required to withdraw, students are not permitted to register for a period of 12 months. Students may re-apply to resume their studies after 12 months.
The following steps will assist students in recovering from Academic Probation:
- Book an appointment with a counsellor. Counsellors can assist with career planning, study skills and time management skills.
- Speak with an academic advisor or program advisor. Advisors can help plan an appropriate course load for the following semesters, and review course descriptions and prerequisites.
- Take a Student Success course. They are designed to help you succeed in your studies and your program.
