Global Health
The strategic plan for TRU School of Nursing outlines our commitment to providing culturally inclusive, responsive education focused on global engagement and learning. Historical examples of how the school has accomplished this include:
- A five year Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) funded project in Nepal, where nursing students from Canada and Nepal, completed collaborative online courses and six-week student exchanges — 1996-2002
- Instructor-led six-week acute/community practicums to Samoa, Thailand and Lesotho — 2005-2017
- Instructor-led two-week community development practicums in Belize and Nicaragua — 2014- 2022
- Study Abroad (Semester 7) practicums in Australia, and Norway — 2008-2022
- Preceptored six-week Indigenous focused practicum in New Hazelton, BC — 2018
In addition to the student practicums, faculty members from TRU and international partners have collaborated on research projects such as: evaluation of student outcomes, lived experiences of students and faculty, the impact on Registered Nurse practice as a result of international student practicums, as well as collaborative projects with faculty from our partner sites.
Students attending any of these global opportunities can apply this experience towards the TRU Global Competency Distinction requirements and receive formal recognition of global skill proficiency at graduation.
Available global health experiences change depending on host site availability.
