Bachelor of Science in Nursing

TRU's School of Nursing has a rich history of providing nursing education over the past 35-plus years. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program (BScN) has been in existence since 1992.

There is a significant program emphasis that graduates will make a positive difference to the health and well-being of all people. Many of the faculty and graduates of the program have received awards and other recognition for their leadership in nursing education, practice or research.

Upon completion of the BScN Program, graduates are eligible to write the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Upon successful completion of the NCLEX you apply for registration to the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN).

The BScN is a four-year program that prepares students to be competent nurses in a variety of health care practice agencies (institutional, community and international), and with people from diverse social and economic backgrounds who have a variety of health concerns.

The BScN program includes eight academic semesters starting each September for 80 students. The practice courses involve various shifts (days/evenings/nights) through the week and weekends along with out-of-town placements that is a requirement for all students. View the BScN degree program curriculum and courses for more information.

The BScN program is known for its commitment to global health. The immersion learning that the program offers in Canada and abroad (e.g., Hazelton, BC, and Norway) has resulted in very positive learning experiences, for both students and communities.

Careers

Graduates from the BScN program can work in a variety of health care settings in community and in institutions. As a member of the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), graduates can apply to the regulation body in other jurisdictions in Canada to register. Those wishing to work outside Canada may be required to write a registration examination in that country. In 2023 the starting salary for an RN in a B.C. hospital was $40.30/hour.

Future steps

Graduates of the BSN program can continue their education by obtaining a Master's degree and a PhD. These additional degrees are required for faculty positions in university schools of nursing and for many administrative and research roles in nursing practice settings.
