Self treatment, first aid, hospital — which one do I need?

Simple injuries such as paper cuts and slivers can be self treated, but all other injuries should be treated by a first aid attendant. The goal of first aid is to get you back to work/class or prepare you to be sent to your doctor or the hospital.

TRU's first aid attendants can provide a wide variety of treatments, such as:

  • bandaging of larger cuts
  • applying butterfly stitches to close larger wounds
  • application of splints, slings and tensor bandages.
  • minor burn wound care.

First aid can provide an assessment if the injured person should seek further medical attention.

Call 9-1-1 for immediate life-threatening situations or if you think that the treatment needed is beyond first aid. While on the phone with 9-1-1, have someone else call first aid for treatment or support while awaiting emergency services if possible.

On the Kamloops campus, designated first aid attendants have been trained in the recognition of opioid overdose and provision of life supporting procedures including the administration of injection naloxone (Narcan).

Transportation for further medical treatment

TRU staff and faculty are not encouraged to transport anyone to the hospital due to risks and liability concerns.

Any life-threatening emergencies, 9-1-1 is to be contacted for transportation to the hospital.

If it is determined by first aid that the situation is non-life threatening, but the injured person needs transportation to the hospital (ex: need stitches):

  • Injured person’s emergency contact, parent, or friend is to be contacted to pick them up for transport to medical aid
  • First aid will assess situation and provide direction on the best mode of transport for injured person, if necessary.

Depending on the condition of the injured person, first aid can stay until transportation has arrived.

Reporting procedures

All employee injuries must be reported to their direct supervisor and first aid attendant immediately.

All injuries require the completion of an Incident Report Form. This will allow the safety department to ensure that hazardous situations are rectified or changes to procedures are instituted, so others are not injured.
