Persons Requiring Assistance Program
TRU is committed to providing resources, training, and practices to ensure everyone on campus can safely navigate an emergency. Recognizing that some may require assistance, Risk and Safety Services has launched the Person Requiring Assistance program.
This optional program ensures anyone — employees, students, visitors and contractors — can safely evacuate with confidence by creating and regularly reviewing a personal evacuation plan.
People who might require assistance
There are many types of health conditions and/or disabilities that affect a person’s ability to safely evacuate a building. Some examples might include:
- Requiring the use of a wheelchair, walker, crutches, cane, or other mobility assisting device
- Temporary conditions such as recovery after surgery, breaks or sprains
- Not readily identifiable health concerns or invisible disabilities
- Pregnancy
- Vision and/or hearing impairment
- Breathing related health concerns (asthma, etc.)
- Prone to intense reactions to emotional or mental health stressors or suffering from claustrophobia
- Any limitation that would limit the ability to descend stairs or be a part of an evacuation process
