Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
WHMIS is a comprehensive system for providing health and safety information on the safe use of hazardous products in Canadian workplaces. Recent changes in federal and provincial legislation have updated WHMIS, now known as WHMIS 2015, to reflect alignment with the worldwide hazard communication system known as GHS — the globally harmonized system of classification and labelling of chemicals.
Under WHMIS 2015, as with previous versions of WHMIS, Thompson Rivers University, as the employer, must ensure that all hazardous products are properly labelled and ensure up-to-date safety data sheets are readily available for anyone working with hazardous products. TRU must also provide worker education and training and ensure appropriate control measures to protect the health and safety of workers.
For additional information, refer to federal and provincial resources below. If there are questions or concerns, contact Risk and Safety Services (safety@tru.ca).
WHMIS training
TRU employees, graduate and research students, and teachers’ assistants who work where hazardous products are used, stored, or handled must successfully complete WHMIS training. Training is free and is also open to students.
An online WHMIS training module is available to TRU faculty, staff and students through Moodle. A TRU email address and/or TRU ID is required.
