Bachelor of Education in Trades and Technology
The Bachelor of Education in Trades Technology (BETT) is a two-phase program that prepares students to be certified by the BC Ministry of Education, Teacher Certification Branch (TCB) to teach in BC secondary school settings.
Completion of Phase I of the BETT program will enable you to apply for a Trades Certificate teaching credential which qualifies you to teach Technology Education courses in BC high schools.
Phase I is completed in person at our Kamloops campus and is a full-time program 14 month program that starts in July of each year.
The optional Phase II combines your Phase I studies, Prior Learning and Recognition credits from your trade apprenticeship training, 3 credits of Mathematics at the undergraduate level, and further academic studies in a variety of courses to provide the required 150 credits for a full Bachelor of Education in Trades and Technology and the opportunity to apply for a Professional Certificate teaching credential, qualifying you to teach both Technology Education and Academic courses in the BC school curriculum.
Phase II is self-paced and is designed for working Phase I graduates to obtain their full Bachelor of Education degree. This phase can be completed either by continuing to study in-person or to take online courses until the required 150 credits have been accumulated.
Program Philosophy, Vision, and Mission
The TRU B.Ed. Trades and Technology program, in collaboration with the wider educational community, is dedicated to developing exemplary teachers. Graduates of the program will be knowledgeable about effective pedagogies, critical and reflective about their own practice, guided by ethically responsible professional conduct, and become lifelong learners. Our graduates will have a rich teaching repertoire based on robust understanding of Indigenous perspectives, worldviews and ways of knowing and being, as well as anti-oppressive, anti-racist education, and equity, diversity and inclusion. Graduates’ teaching repertoire is grounded on relevant educational research, which guides adjustments to practice. Their teaching repertoire will allow them to create multiple paths to knowledge, positive relationships, and collaborative learning environments. Additionally, graduates will employ a variety of methods to assess and report student growth and understanding.
