Jess graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Commerce in 2015. He proudly received his Juris Doctor from Thompson Rivers University, Faculty of Law, in 2018. While in university, Jess worked several jobs in order to put himself through school, which was important to him and of which he was very proud. Jess’ hard work and dedication culminated when he fulfilled a lifelong dream, being called to the Alberta Bar on September 5, 2019, immediately immersing himself in the legal community, founding what is now called the Jess Bray Memorial Lawyers Slopitch League in Calgary. When it came to Jess Bray, you could never tell what he loved more - actually playing on a team, or coaching and organizing. His passion was equal whether he was stepping to the plate himself, or cheering on and coaching someone who was timidly picking up a bat for the very first time, usually because he had encouraged that someone to come on out and give it a try. Jess was a natural at bringing people together and getting the best out of them, and he did it best when sport was involved. Softball or ultimate, curling or flag football, handball or spikeball - it didn’t matter what the game was, he only seemed to care that it was a chance to grab a bunch of friends and get out there. In sport and in life, Jess brought his A-game to every circle. It didn’t matter whether he was coaching the community kids, thriving with the competitive teammates he grew up with, or leading the rag tag bunch of newbies he won t-shirt after t-shirt with in various recreational championships, you were always sure to see the same ultra-competitive and fun-loving Jess. Jess was a true embodiment of hard work, perseverance, love of community, love of friendship and collegiality, and love of sport. The Jess Bray Memorial Award seeks to keep that important legacy alive through the annual selection of a deserving recipient who genuinely embodies these qualities.
