David Knapp

David is Senior Counsel with the Immigration Law Division of the Ontario Regional Office of the Department of Justice. Since his call to the bar in 2006, he has practiced exclusively as litigation counsel with the Department of Justice, representing Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency at the Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada on his own files and leading litigation teams. David’s work includes all aspects of Immigration and Citizenship Law including applications for permanent and temporary residence, refugee issues, enforcement and admissibility issues, and citizenship refusals and revocations.
David has extensive teaching and mentorship experience both inside the Department of Justice and externally. He is a previous member of the Student Committee of the Ontario Regional Office, and has mentored multiple articling and summer students as well as new lawyers in the Immigration Law Division. David has delivered training to client officials in Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada as well as the Canada Border Services Agency. Externally, he is a Program Evaluator for the Toronto Metropolitan University Law Practice Program, and is excited to return for his second year as the coach of the Thompson Rivers University Faculty of Law, Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Law moot team.
