Chemistry
A knowledge of chemistry is required for all fields of scientific endeavour — it affects every aspect of our lives, the water we drink, the air we breathe, the energy we use and the new materials that we use in our modern world.
Bachelor of Science Majors
Chemistry
Develop a strong understanding of the fundamental concepts in analytical, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. Emphasis is placed on practical, hands-on experience on modern scientific instrumentation and students are often involved in research and outreach activities.
Chemical biology
Combines chemistry and molecular biology in a way that prepares students for the explosion of knowledge of life at the molecular level. Students learn to apply chemical principles and knowledge to biological applications, and study both chemistry and biology before specializing in various aspects of chemistry, biochemistry or molecular biology.
Environmental chemistry
Study the chemical processes taking place in the environment as a result of human activities including urban air and water pollution, depletion of ozone layer, production of toxic substances from chemical wastes, prevalence of pesticides, and climate change. Learn the fundamentals to accurately assess human activities in the environment.
Opportunities for students
Laboratories are available for first-year studies, analytical and physical chemistry, and structural and synthetic chemistry. Instrumentation includes GC-MS and capillary electrophoresis.
Careers for graduates
Chemistry graduates are employed in computers and telecommunications, fine and heavy chemical manufacturing, food and beverage production, mining and metallurgy, petroleum, pharmaceuticals/drugs, plastics, and pulp and paper. They are also employed by government agencies in education, forensic investigation, mineral analysis, public health, research and development support for resource industries, technical and analytical information development, waste management, and water and air quality management.
