What is data science?
Data science combines multiple fields, including statistics, scientific methods, artificial intelligence, and data analysis, to extract value from data.
What is artificial intelligence?
Artificial intelligence means getting a computer to mimic human behaviour in some way.
What is machine learning?
Machine learning consists of the techniques that enable computers to figure things out from the data and deliver artificial intelligence applications.
What is deep learning?
Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that enables computers to solve more complex problems.
What is big data?
Big data is data that contains greater variety, arriving in increasing volumes and with more velocity. This is also known as the three Vs. Put simply, big data is larger, more complex data sets, especially from new data sources. These data sets are so voluminous that traditional data processing software just can’t manage them.
What is data analysis?
Data analysis is a process of inspecting, cleansing, transforming, and modelling data with the goal of discovering useful information, informing conclusions, and supporting decision-making. Data analysis has multiple facets and approaches, encompassing diverse techniques under a variety of names, and is used in different business, science, and social science domains.
Program
What's the advantage of this program compared to similar programs?
This program offers a wide range of courses covering foundations of mathematics, statistics, computing science, machine learning and AI. All courses are application-oriented and project-based, which give students the opportunity to gain deep knowledge of data science and to exposes them to a large range of techniques valuable in industry settings. For example, to emphasize practical aspects of data science, the program includes three Integrated Practice courses and two Data Science Project courses.
For international students considering fast-track programs (12 months or less), this two-year program also qualifies for a longer working permit in Canada after graduation (Post-graduation Work Permit, PGWP). Currently, program graduates can stay in Canada to work for three years and are qualified to apply for Permanent Resident (PR) status. See details on IRCC website.
In addition, there is a four-month break in the summer of the first year. This enables students to either take a break and experience the Canadian lifestyle and landscape, or find a job related to Applied Data Science to enhance credentials and add experience to one’s CV.
What is the duration of this program?
This program normally requires two years to complete. Each year students in a cohort will take the same courses outlined in program structure and graduate in April of the following year. Students who need preparation courses or who underperform may require more time to complete the program.
What is the schedule for tuition payment instalments?
Fees are paid per semester. See information on specific payment deadlines.
What other costs should I expect to pay during the program?
Students are required to have a laptop computer. See how other costs can be estimated.
Are there scholarships and awards available for students?
Yes, there are TA and RA positions available, and they will be posted on Program Moodle pages and announced by email. TRU has many scholarships and bursaries for domestic and international students. Please see Scholarship and Funding for details (https://www.tru.ca/awards/awards.html).
Are work/intern terms mandatory?
No, this is not a co-op program, so a working term is not mandatory. However, students are encouraged to find a data science-related job in the summer. The program and TRU Career Center can help students find a suitable job. Data Science Club also has a Placement Cell to connect students with industries and share job information.

How much time does it take to hear back on my application?
Applications are typically processed within 5 - 10 business days of receiving all required information (i.e., completed application).
Is work experience a requirement for the application?
Work experience is beneficial, but not required.

- Pay your tuition fees/deposit as outlined in your Letter of Acceptance.
- Inform when you have made the fee payment.

- Attend campus-wide orientation and complete the New Student Checklist.
