Program Overview
If your TOEFL iBT is 61 or lower, or your IELTS is lower than 5.0, you can still take lower-level courses and these will help you upgrade your English skills.
Level 1: Five ESAL courses | |

Level 1 description: Students are considered full-time EAP students. On successful completion, students proceed to Level 2. |

Notes
- Students should consult their academic advisor about additional requirements for entry into specific post-secondary courses or programs.
- ESAL 0570 and 0580 meet entrance standards for English 1100 and English 1110.
English Placement Test
Incoming EAP students are required to take the English Placement Test (EPT) to determine appropriate placement in the absence of any other evidence of language proficiency. If you have test scores higher than Level 5 entry, you will not be required to take ESAL courses.

In addition, all new students are required to attend the Testing and Orientation Week, which is held at TRU the week prior to the beginning of each semester. EPT Test Waivers are also possible with appropriate TOEFL or IELTS scores.
