Program Overview

If your TOEFL iBT is 61 or lower, or your IELTS is lower than 5.0, you can still take lower-level courses and these will help you upgrade your English skills.

Level 1: Five ESAL courses
Level 1 entry requirement:
TRU English placement test required

Level 1 description:
Students are considered full-time EAP students. On successful completion, students proceed to Level 2.
Level 2: Five ESAL courses | EAP foundations certificate 
Level 2 entry requirement:

TRU EAP Level 1
Level 2 description:
Students are considered full-time EAP students. The curriculum consists of one semester of full-time EAP study. On successful completion, students will proceed to Level 3.
Level 3: Five ESAL courses | EAP intermediate certificate 
Level 3 entry requirement:
IELTS: 5.0+
TOEFL iBT: 61+
TOEFL PBT: 500-529
CAEL: Overall 40+
TRU EAP Level 2
Level 3 description:
Students are considered full-time EAP students. The curriculum consists of one semester of full-time EAP study. On successful completion, students will proceed to Level 4.
Level 4: Four ESAL courses + one academic course | EAP pre-advanced certificate
Level 4 entry requirement:
IELTS: 5.5+ with no bands below 5.0
TOEFL iBT: 71+
TOEFL PBT: 530-549
CAEL: Overall 50+, no subtest below 40
TRU EAP Level 3
Level 4 description:
Consists of four core ESAL courses. Students may take one ESAL elective or academic course.
Level 5: Two ESAL courses + two academic courses | EAP advanced certificate
Level 5 entry requirement:
IELTS: 6.0+ with no bands below 5.5
TOEFL iBT: 80+
TOEFL PBT: 550-569
TWE 4.0+
CAEL: Overall 60+, no subtest below 50
TRU EAP Level 4
Level 5 description:
Consists of two core ESAL courses. Students may take two academic courses or ESAL electives (up to six credits).

Notes
  • Students should consult their academic advisor about additional requirements for entry into specific post-secondary courses or programs.
  • ESAL 0570 and 0580 meet entrance standards for English 1100 and English 1110.

English Placement Test

Incoming EAP students are required to take the English Placement Test (EPT) to determine appropriate placement in the absence of any other evidence of language proficiency. If you have test scores higher than Level 5 entry, you will not be required to take ESAL courses.

In addition, all new students are required to attend the Testing and Orientation Week, which is held at TRU the week prior to the beginning of each semester. EPT Test Waivers are also possible with appropriate TOEFL or IELTS scores.
